Local Efforts
There is a growing interest in the use of community and ecosystem-based marine management approaches in both state and federal resource agencies. PMCC believes that citizen involvement in stewardship of marine resources is key to successful conservation outcomes. In Washington state, a model of effective community-based stewardship has been developed through the Northwest Straits Initiative, a federally funded entity that supports Marine Resource Committees (MRC) in seven coastal counties. PMCC's community program manager, Caroline Gibson, was elected in 2005 to a four year term as marine science practioner on the Jefferson County MRC.
