Opening Reception with Daniel Fears

Join us on Wednesday, November 13 from 6:00 to 8:00 p at KMFA for an opening reception and performance by singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Fears.

Daniel Fears grew up loving a lot of different types of music. From the gospel and christian music he was raised on, to the hip hop and r&b that informed his adolescence, and the classical music he studied at The University of Texas and Yale University. Daniel has a deep appreciation for soulful music of all genres.

Since his debut in 2020, Fears has sought out musical experiences of all types–from opening for R&B artists like Mac Ayres and BLK ODYSSY, to performing at Kerrville Folk Festival, or selling out shows with an 18-piece string orchestra. Daniel’s path has been (and perhaps will always be) an unconventional one.

His latest project, Close to Home seeks to bring all of his influences into one space. Close to Home combines Fears’ distinct melodic R&B sound (imagine artists like John Legend, Frank Ocean) with an ensemble of strings, voices, guitar, and piano, totally unplugged and recorded live. For his most vulnerable and genre-blending record yet, Fears enlisted the help of nine composers to reimagine his original music for this ensemble. He and his friends even crowd-sourced the funding for this project–raising over $15,000 in just under 4 weeks.

Daniel’s music can be heard in the award-winning indie documentary “Route To Emancipation” and in the short film “If They Took Us Back”–which premiered to a sold-out audience at the historic Stateside Theater at the Paramount.

Intimate Performance with Lara Downes

Joins us for a special intimate performance with world-renown concert pianist Lara Downes, Thursday, November 14 at 3:30 pm.

Recently honored as Classical Woman of the Year by NPR’s Performance Today, American pianist Lara Downes has been called “a musical ray of hope” by NBC News, “a classical music instigator pushing the music forward with great gusto” by the NY Amsterdam News, and “an explorer whose imagination is fired by bringing notice to the underrepresented and forgotten” by The Log Journal. An iconoclast and trailblazer, Lara occupies a unique position of visibility through her dynamic work as a sought-after soloist, a Billboard Chart-topping recording artist, and a beloved NPR personality as host of her popular video show Amplify with Lara Downes. She has garnered millions of fans spanning diverse communities: her devoted NPR viewers and 100,000+ weekly listeners to her nationally syndicated radio programs intersect with her live concert audiences and her followers on streaming platforms to form a broad and constantly expanding fan base.

Lara’s recent and upcoming onstage adventures include guest appearances with the orchestras of Philadelphia, Boston, Detroit, Dallas, Louisville, Indianapolis and others, with recitals and residencies at Lincoln Center, Disney Hall, Ravinia, Tanglewood, the Gilmore Festival, Carolina Performing Arts, Washington Performing Arts, Caramoor, and Saratoga Performing Arts Center, among others. Her creative collaborations embrace an eclectic range of artists including the Miró Quartet, musical multi-hyphenate Rhiannon Giddens, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Rita Dove, Broadway legend Brian Stokes Mitchell, author John McWhorter and violinist Daniel Hope. Her close partnerships with prominent composers span genres and generations, with premieres and commissions coming from Billy Childs, Valerie Coleman, Paola Prestini, Arturo O’Farrill, Jimmy Lopez-Bellido, Teddy Abrams, Clarice Assad, and many others. A cultural visionary with a firm finger on the pulse of tomorrow, Lara is increasingly active as a curator and creative partner with institutions including Lincoln Center, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Brevard Music festival, and as Resident Artist for Classical KDFC in San Francisco and Classical KUSC in Los Angeles.

Meals

Our welcome reception on Wednesday will feature beverages and snacks. PMCC will provide coffee, beverages and assorted pastries for breakfast on Thursday and Friday mornings and we have invited several food trucks to be on-site at KMFA on Thursday for lunch. Registered attendees will receive a coupon good for $10 that you can use at any of the participating food trucks. Dinner is on your own, but our local station partners are organizing Dine O’Round dinners at local restaurants that you can sign up for and dine with a small group of fellow attendees. Once we have that information confirmed, we’ll make it available to registrants. If you are attending the Crash Course for Music Programmers, we will have lunch for you before the workshop begins.

Attire

This event is casual and jeans, sneakers and t-shirts are welcome. The weather in Austin in November is typically mild with temperatures ranging from 65-75 degrees during the day and cooler at night. A light jacket and good walking shoes are recommended. If you are planning to attend one of the Dine O’Round dinners, check the restaurant listing for any attire restrictions.

All participants, including attendees, speakers, sponsors, volunteers, PMCC and partner organization staff, service providers, and all others are expected to abide by this Code of Conduct.

Everyone is encouraged to consider the impact of their words and actions on those with different backgrounds and experiences.

All participants should strive to treat each other, event and venue staff, and all others with respect, regardless of gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age, religion, and any other status protected by laws in which the event is being held.

Follow federal and local health and safety guidelines. While participating in PMCC sanctioned events participants are required to abide by federal and local health and safety guidelines.

Be present and participate actively. The ways that people show up and participate vary. Be present and participate in ways that are authentic to you, while respecting that others may do so in different ways. To support a participatory learning environment for everyone, be mindful of how much time you occupy in discussions and Q&A sessions.

Recording or transmission of any conference content including, but not limited to, sessions, workshops, small group discussions, events or any other content, is strictly prohibited.

Harassment such as verbal comments or imagery that reinforce social structures of domination related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age, religion, and any other status protected by laws in which the event is being held will not be tolerated. Any attendee who expresses abusive, offensive, or degrading language or imagery that encourages, glorifies, incites, or calls for violence, emotional, or physical harm against an individual or a group of people will be asked to leave.

If a participant engages in unacceptable behavior, PMCC staff may take whatever actions they deem appropriate to stop the offending behavior. If you feel threatened or violated because of intimidating, harassing, abusive, discriminatory, derogatory, or demeaning conduct, please immediately notify PMCC staff.
